5.4.1 Arms and Armour

Livy’s account is clear about the Mysians being bowmen. However, Sekunda states that Mysia had no indigenous tradition of archery and is sceptical about Mysians as archers.115 The long period of Achaemenid rule over the area probably saw the adoption of the composite bow. Being foot archers, the Mysians would have been armed with a larger bow with greater draw weight, similar to those used by Achaemenid and Cretan archers. Archery does require some skill, especially drawing heavy bows. The complexity of manufacturing the composite bow and its arrows requires time, effort and expertise, as well as money.116 For the Mysians to have supplied such a large contingent of archers suggests that some form of archery tradition had been established among the Mysians.
